Our Farm's Story

Established in 2012, Long Roots Farm is a regenerative pasture-based farm nestled in the rolling hills of Middlebrook, Virginia. We raise 100% grass-fed and finished beef and Heritage breed Katahdin Lamb, along with a small flock of pasture raised chickens. Our familys goal is to raise happy, healthy animals and provide nutrient-dense food for our community while improving our farm's land using rotational grazing.

Our goal of working with nature and its cycles helps us raise animals that stay happy and healthy, creating a farming experience better for the animals and the farmer. Keeping our animals healthy ensures that our products are of the highest quality, without the use of pesticides, antibiotics, or GMO's.

The Herd

Our cattle herd is predominantly Hereford with a few Angus sprinkled in. I have always loved Hereford cows since I was a young boy growing up on a mostly Angus farm. Hereford cows are a docile breed with a high milk fat, ensuring their calves grow fat and jolly!

The Flock

Our flock of Heritage Breed Katahdin Sheep are our children's favorite, and were our first real enterprise of our farm. They roam our pastures from dawn to dusk, usually finishing the day near our house for comfort. They get snacks of stale bread or crackers every now and again, when the kids feel like giving treats. Katahdin's are a hair sheep, meaning they shed their hair, thankfully relinquishing the chore of shearing. These lambs produce a mild flavored meat that is outstanding.
